Write... and know why: assessing your writing

Have you tried creating an argumentative essay in class and are worried about how to assess it quickly and objectively?

With this proposal you can do it in a simple and structured way.

Work on written expression in Year 3 of ESO by setting your students an opinion essay in English about the impact of social media, defining clear guidelines or an assessment rubric.

The final product will be an argumentative essay that you'll receive marked automatically, with a grade and detailed feedback to guide improvement.

1. Create a new activity

Go to Home → Create activity → Fill in the basic information

2. Think about the prompt

  • Select 'Writing your own exercises'

  • Enter the exercise prompt:

Write an opinion essay about whether social media has a positive or negative impact on teenagers.

3. Enter the response guidelines:

In the “Response guidelines” field, you can specify exactly what you want to be marked.

Example:

The text must contain at least 200 words.

Students must use connectors (however, although, therefore…).

Grammar and spelling will be especially evaluated.

The structure must include introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion.

Formal register is required.

These guidelines will guide the automatic marking.

Alternative: create an assessment rubric

If you want more precision, you can create a custom rubric.

4. We finish creating the activity.


When the student submits the essay, Mathew:

  • Analyses the text

  • Applies the guidelines or the rubric

  • Generates:
